Even though Leigh Whannell is regularly praised for co-creating Saw and Insidious, his work on Upgrade deserves far more credit. Not only does the cyberpunk horror offer an enthralling story and towering action, but its ending is sure to catch anybody off guard.

As Upgrade opens, Grey is enjoying a drive with his wife when a bunch of assassins crash into them. After executing the wife, the hitmen shoot Grey in the spine, rendering him quadriplegic. Shortly after, eccentric scientist Eron inserts an AI implant into Grey called STEM, allowing him to walk again.

When STEM offers to hunt the people who ruined Grey's life, he's more than happy to oblige. STEM hijacks Grey's body, allowing him to overpower the criminals. However, he discovers the hitmen weren't hired to assassinate Grey but to paralyse him, with Grey deducing that Eron orchestrated the whole thing so that he could use Grey as his guinea pig for STEM.

Once Grey breaks into Eron's lab, he learns the horrifying truth: Eron wasn't pulling the strings; STEM was.

STEM masterminded everything, hoping to eliminate Eron and shut down all safety protocols to destroy the AI so that it could possess a human body, with STEM acting like it had Grey's best interests at heart. Instead, STEM was actually looking out for #1 the entire time.
