In chilling paranormal drama The Others, high-strung mother Grace is caring for her photosensitive children, Anne and Nicholas, awaiting her husband’s return from World War II. When a supernatural force begins tearing down the curtains in her house, Grace becomes terrified that the sunlight will kill her children.
As riveting as The Others is, it initially seems to follow the haunted house formula to a tee, but in the final moments, it's revealed that Grace and her children are the ghosts and have been unknowingly haunting the living occupants of the property. Grace learns that she lost her mind years ago, compelling her to kill her children and herself. And when the three of them were reborn as spirits, Grace falsely believed God gave her a second chance.
While watching The Others for the first time, there's no reason to doubt Grace's understanding of the situation. Sure, she may be strict, but she's presented as rational and morally upright, making it easy to trust her interpretation of the strange occurrences. On top of that, Grace acts like she would do anything to protect her little ones, making their fate all the more heartbreaking.
