20 Horror Movies WAY More Successful Than Anyone Expected

Over the years, Jordan Peele has established himself as quite the polymath in terms of acting, writing, producing, and directing.

But for the longest time, he was best known for sketch comedy, due to his Emmy-winning show, Key and Peele. As a result, it was odd when Peele announced he was directing a horror feature called Get Out, which centred around racial discrimination. Even though it was ambitious for the talented funnyman to throw his hat into the filmmaking ring, hype for his directorial debut was pretty tame.

However, due to its golden cast, airtight writing, lingering mystery, and relevant social commentary, Get Out resonated on a global scale, earning a quarter of a billion dollars worldwide on a $4.5 million budget, making an extraordinary ROI for a debut horror. Get Out received multiple Oscar nominations, and Jordan Peele won for Best Original Screenplay, making him the first black writer to obtain that award.

What was initially thought to be a clever but limited horror project transformed into a cultural landmark that didn't just exhibit Peele's skills but redefined a genre.
