20 Huge Horror Movie Hits NOBODY Expected
3. The Conjuring: Last Rites
While it'd be ridiculous to call The Conjuring franchise anything less than a massive hit for Warner Bros., it also seemed abundantly clear that the series peaked back in 2018 with spin-off The Nun, which grossed a then-franchise high of $366 million.
Though The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It and The Nun 2 both posted solid results at the box office - $206 million and $269.6 million respectively - it seemed like the series had well and truly found its ceiling.
It seemed like the recently released The Conjuring: Last Rites would probably perform similarly to The Nun 2, then, but it actually ended up soaring past expectations, crossing the $400 million mark after its third weekend and becoming the series' highest-grossing film. This is an especially impressive performance considering the wildly mediocre reviews and general consensus that The Conjuring as an IP has had its day.
Without much direct competition in its immediate future, Last Rites could certainly leg out to around $500 million before it's all said and done. Needless to say, despite this being marketed as the final mainline Conjuring, would it surprise anyone if The Conjuring 5 was announced before year's end?
