20 Most Iconic Gangster Movie Moments

3. 'I Believe In America' - The Godfather (1972)

The original and often cited by many as the best: The Godfather changed the face of cinema and the studio production line of films in Hollywood in 1971. Most see this as a perfect film, from the fantastic cast to the incredibly accurate production values. This is a classy film to watch and also one that has stood the test of time. Stanley Kubrick once stated that this film was the most perfect he had ever seen and probably the best €“ high praise indeed from such a purist filmmaker. Iconic Moment: It has to be the opening speech; "I believe in America". Despite the fact that the man giving the speech is discussing his daughter and how America has given her a chance and taken it away again in the form of an abusive boyfriend, the speech itself is effectively telling the audience that the American dream is possible to all, even those with criminal intentions. You could argue that every scene in The Godfather is iconic and, in reality, you would probably be correct. But as subtle opening scenes go, this quietly remarkable monologue is one that sets the entire foundation for all three Godfather films - for that alone it can only be recognised as sheer brilliance.
