14. Gollums Cave - The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Reviews for Peter Jacksons first entry in his Hobbit trilogy were notably mixed, but even the biggest naysayers cant deny how great the Gollums cave sequence was, which saw Martin Freemans Bilbo going up against Andy Serkis (reprising his most famous role) in a game of riddles. Set before the events of The Lord of the Rings, this iconic scene certainly the most eagerly awaited in the film sees Bilbo acquiring the One Ring. Origin story! The great thing about this scene was that it felt completely in tune with the work that Peter Jackson did on The Lord of the Rings, which unfortunately cannot be said for the rest of the film. Andy Serkis is masterful in this scene, and his torment felt as he loses the One Ring to Bilbo is genuinely heart-breaking. Above all, though, this scene manages to be funny and gripping all at once without a doubt, a total and utterly masterful set-piece.
