11. How Could Azkaban Let Another Prisoner Escape Unnoticed?
The escape of the convicted mass murderer Sirius Black caused a great panic in the wizarding world. He was front page news in the Daily Prophet, Wanted posters bearing his animated cackling face were everywhere, and Dementors were sent to Hogwarts to guard its gates. Great pains were taken to protect Harry Potter, whom the Ministry believed was Blacks target. After his second escape from the Ministry (with Harry and Hermiones help), the search for him appears to have died down, as theres no reference to it again other than Black has to break into a wizarding home to use the Floo network to speak to Harry. The escape of Barty Crouch Jr. should have inspired just as great a manhunt, as he was a convicted Death Eater. Yet he isnt revealed until his Polyjuice potion wears off and Dumbledore casually suggests that they send an owl to Azkaban inquiring about their missing prisoner. So, either the Azkaban guards covered up the escape, or Cornelius Fudge covered it up to avoid another scandal. The latter seems more likely, given Fudges reaction to Harrys announcement that Voldemort was back and the actions he took in the next film, The Order of the Phoenix.
