20 Idiotic Decisions Made By Characters In The Harry Potter Films

13. Posting Dementors Around Hogwarts And Hogsmeade

Dementors are the guards of Azkaban, who use their abilities as happiness vacuums to keep their prisoners docile and inert. Their most powerful weapon is the threat of the Kiss, which sucks the soul out of their victim, leaving him worse than dead. The Ministry of Magic, in its infinite wisdom, has decided to place a platoon of them around the Hogwarts grounds in the hopes they will catch Azkaban escapee Sirius Black, and protect Harry Potter in the process. Did it occur to the Ministry that since Sirius was able to escape the emotionally draining effect the Dementors had on him when he was captive in Azkaban, he might figure out a way to avoid them around Hogwarts? As for protecting Harry: they affected him to the point where he passed out on the Hogwarts Express. They caused him to fall off his broom and nearly fall to his death during a Quidditch match. Plus, they nearly performed the Kiss on Harry as well. It€™s obvious that the Dementors don€™t discriminate between free wizards and prisoners, and Dumbledore warns the students of this at the opening-of-term feast. Madame Rosmerta rips into Cornelius Fudge about the Dementors scaring all of her customers away from her pub in Hogsmeade, because clearly, these are not the creatures you want guarding anything, especially your children.
