20 Idiotic Decisions Made By Characters In The Harry Potter Films

14. The Ministry of Magic Giving A Time-Turner To A 13-Year-Old

Hermione Granger is the most brilliant witch for her age; everyone says so. She gets the Hogwarts staff to issue her a Time-Turner, which allows her to take twice the number of classes of every other student at Hogwarts. One can assume that the Ministry is in charge of such devices (indeed, in the books there's a 'Time Room' in the Department of Mysteries), as it has so much potential for misuse, especially for practitioners of the Dark Arts. So that means the Ministry had to sign off on the request. Now, if you can€™t trust the average fully-qualified wizard with a Time-Turner, how can you give one to a 13-year-old? Why is she so much more responsible? Forget €œbooks and cleverness.€ This is an Absolute Power device, and as the saying goes, €œabsolute power corrupts absolutely.€ Again, she's 13 - teenagers don't tend to be the most responsible people in the world, even if they are prodigiously intelligent. Hermione did only use the device as she was instructed, with Dumbledore giving her permission to use it to rescue Sirius (and Buckbeak). Granted, everything did go right in the end, but it€™s doubtful the Ministry would be too happy if they really knew the truth about how Hermione used their device to circumvent Ministry decrees.
