17. Frances McDormand Actually Slept In Her Van For Much Of The Shoot - Nomadland
Nomadland is one of the most acclaimed films of 2020, starring Frances McDormand as Fern, a middle-aged woman who embarks on a transient, nomadic life, travelling across the American West in her van and even sleeping in it.
In order to disappear more easily into the character, McDormand not only worked some of the menial jobs depicted in the film - such as a brief stint as an Amazon warehouse packer - but also slept in the van for some of the shoot.
Numerous other crew members such as director Chloé Zhao also followed suit, though McDormand did later admit that she eventually ditched this approach and instead slept in modest hotels with the rest of the crew. She said:
"At 61, it’s much better for me to pretend to be exhausted than to actually be exhausted. I figured that out."
