In the months leading up to Shang-Chi's release, there were persistent rumours that the film would feature a cameo from Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd), given that both he and Shang-Chi (Simu Liu) of course reside in San Francisco.

This obviously didn't end up happening, but it was a major consideration when the film was being written. Marvel Studios producer Jonathan Schwartz said:

"We did talk about other characters who might make sense, both in San Francisco and elsewhere, so there are few different iterations [with] other folks who could have popped up. I think there's always a little bit of give and take there. But you know, the script evolved over time, into what it was, and ultimately we were telling Shang's story, so I think we're very happy with the version that ended up on screen."

All in all it was surely the right decision, to let Shang-Chi's story stand on its own without any wider superhero encumbrances. Then again, maybe Ant-Man was secretly in the movie but we just couldn't see him?
