20 Incredible Film Performances That Didn't Get The Credit They Deserved
10. Ryan Reynolds - Buried (2010)
With a filmography littered with generic romantic comedies and disappointing comic-book adaptations, it's easy to forget that Ryan Reynolds is capable of giving a brilliant performance under the right circumstances. The best of his career comes in Rodrigo Cortes' uncompromisingly claustrophobic movie that takes place entirely inside a coffin. Reynolds plays a civilian contractor who wakes up bound and buried alive, with only a lighter and cellphone for company. What follows is an incredible one-man performance that belies the gimmicky nature of the premise to generate a taut and suspenseful real-time thriller. As the only man on screen, the actor manages to hold the audience's attention and generate both sympathy and edge-of-the-seat panic as the tension becomes almost unbearable. Although credit must go to the inventive camerawork and atmospheric sound design, Reynolds does an astounding job in carrying the movie from the confines of the coffin. If only he could do this kind of work on a more consistent basis.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
