An NC-17 rated drama about sex addiction is always going to be a tough sell, but the re-teaming of Hunger collaborators Steve McQueen and Michael Fassbender provides a riveting character study, with a powerhouse performance from the lead actor reinforcing his credentials as one of the finest talents in modern cinema. In the lead role of Brandon Sullivan, Fassbender exposes himself both physically and emotionally in a captivating performance full of self-loathing and denial that still manages to remain understated and humane. The actor perfectly captures the essence of a man that projects himself to the outside world as a regular person, yet suffers a desperately lonely existence that becomes increasingly depressing as the narrative unfolds. Although the role was showered with critical praise, it ranks as one of the biggest snubs in Academy Awards history that Fassbender didn't even receive a nomination for Best Actor for his stunning turn, given that it is without a doubt one of the greatest acting performances of the 21st Century.
I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
