You can't go to the cinema now without there being a found footage horror film playing. The sub-genre may be en vogue now, but 1999 found footage film The Blair Witch Project was a breath of fresh air when it was released. Taking inspiration from the infamous Cannibal Holocaust, The Blair Witch Project used the "film-makers go into the woods and never return but their footage does" routine to great effect. Filmed on a budget of just $25,000, the film-makers had hopes that the film would be shown on cable television. On the back of an inspired internet marketing campaign, however, the film went on to make $250m at the box-office. The film had been parodied to death since, but you cannot underestimate its influence on independent horror cinema.
