In Avengers: Endgame, Thor blames himself for failing to kill Thanos, which causes him to become a despondent drunkard. Although this was a big change, the Asgardian went through more changes than any other character while the script was being written. Thor was meant to become so devastated after failing to kill Thanos, he became a vigilante who hunts and executes criminals. This story arc was repurposed for Hawkeye.

There was also going to be a Rocky-like montage showing Thor training to get back into shape. This was cut to highlight Thor's depression.

When Thor performs the time-heist, he goes to Asgard with Rocket. Originally, he would have headed to his world with Iron Man. Idris Elba's character, Hemidall, would attack the pair, believing Loki was impersonating Thor. The writers then thought it would be a nice idea for Thor to bump into a younger version of himself. This confrontation would make Thor realise how far he had fallen, reinvigorating him with purpose.

The writers changed their mind, believing it would be more emotional if he was given a pep-talk from his mother, Frigga. The idea of "bumping into your younger self" was repurposed for Captain America.
