If the production of Aliens seemed fraught, then the rocky road that eventually led to Alien 3 – funnily enough, the most derided of all Alien films – was positively doomed. Before the production finally got going ,the film passed through many hands, one pair of which belonged to director and screenwriter David Twohy.

Brought on in 1989 to make changes to a script previously penned and abandoned by cyberpunk writer William Gibson, it was Twohy’s version that envisioned the penal colony planet that would form the basis of Alien 3.

Though Twohy later left the project due to the many other creative differences that would plague Alien 3, he did eventually get to put his convicts in space idea into practice when he directed and co-wrote Vin Diesel fronted action sci-fi Pitch Black in 2000.
