20 Mind-Blowing Facts About Alien Movies
8. Alien 3 – Monks In Outer Space
Shortly before David Twohy’s departure from Alien 3, New Zealand
filmmaker Vincent Ward was brought on board to direct and dissatisfied with
Twohy’s script set about crafting his very own vision for the movie. What
vision was that, pray tell? Only a planet made entirely of wood and populated
by space monks, of course.
However, when 20th Century Fox executives realised how much it would cost to put Ward’s vision into fruition and the logical issue of how a planet made of wood could exist in outer space arose they demanded changes which Ward refused to implement and was thus fired for.
Interestingly, Sigourney Weaver seemed quite taken with Ward’s idea calling it ‘very original and very arresting’ and it was featured in a book by journalist David Hughes titled The Greatest Sci-Fi Movies Never Made. Ah, what could have been.
