20 Mind-Blowing Facts About Star Wars

19. The Tusken Raider That Attacks Luke Is Looped (Because There Was Barely Enough Time To Shoot The Movie)

You know the scene €“ Luke, C-3PO and R2-D2 are attacked by Tusken Raiders on Tatooine, who are subsequently warded off by Obi-Wan Kenobi. But take another look at the shot straight after the raider attempts to hit Luke and throws its arms in the air. Notice anything strange? The shot is actually being looped back and forth. The reason? In many ways, the shooting and production of A New Hope was an absolute disaster. Weather delays in Tunisia caused budgeting concerns (and ultimately delayed the film's release from Christmas 1976 to May 1977) and difficulty with the practical effects caused Twentieth Century Fox to crack down and give Lucas just a single week to wrap filming. Anything that hadn't been completed had to be finished during that week, and so when it came to editing (another laborious process), nearly every frame of film was used to try and cobble together a coherent movie. In the case of the Tusken Raiders scene, there wasn't enough footage to make the scene last long enough and so the editors decided to loop it.
