Gwyneth Paltrow's cameo in The Avengers was one of those pleasant surprises for fans which really served to highlight the connectivity between these movies. However, it wasn't always the plan to bring in this character from Iron Man's corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Pepper Potts wasn't included in the original draft of the screenplay and was only brought in on the insistence of star Robert Downey Jr. Whedon was happy to make the change as he enjoyed writing the banter between Pepper and Tony, but this still goes to show just how much swing Downey Jr.'s box office success has given him at the studio.
