Speaking of significant dates, the first film hid another in Gru's ticket number for the girls' dance performance. It was #072069, which breaks up as 07/20/69, or July 20, 1969, the date of the original moon landing, which the film briefly shows. Despite his mother's discouraging words, Gru starts dreaming a dream that day, and it only gets bigger, or shrinkier, as he grows older.

Obviously, this day holds great significance in Gru's heart. One could say it was as life-changing for him as May 26, 2001 was for Carell. So for the ticket to echo that date hints at what the rest of the movie makes clear: that the children and their lives will become as significant to him as his own childhood dreams.
