Poor Dakota, will she ever live down her part as Rachel Ferrier? Screaming children are a burden of any cinema screen, but apply that to the character in front of you and it means you have one annoying brat on your hands. Dakota Fanning spent the entirety of 2005 screaming her curly blonde locks off, and wow, can that girl scream. The doe-eyed child added nothing to War of the Worlds as the token daughter, other than to play a young damsel in distress who seemed unable to a) stay quiet, or b) stay out of sight.
Children in general in films tend to be pretty marmite, but you would struggle to find anyone who liked, let alone loved, Rachel. Then there is the whole happy family element - viewers were conned into thinking War of the Worlds was a sci-fi thriller, but it was actually a mushy drama about a family learning to be together again. Having an annoying child work through her issues with daddy dearest wasn't what we signed up for. You always knew that Rachel would make it out of the alien onslaught alive...more's the pity.
