AI is a hot topic right now, and although the bubble is about to burst and the promised advances to society and culture are receding into the ether, filmmakers are still hedging their bets and showing precisely what happens when we become over-reliant on technology.

Such is the premise of Mercy, in which Detective Raven (Chris Pratt) finds himself in a Minority Report (2002) scenario, forced to prove his innocence against the system he has been a key part of upholding, for a crime he didn’t commit. He finds himself on the wrong end of an automated judicial system, facing AI avatar Mercy (Rebecca Ferguson), who acts as judge, jury, and executioner. Raven has 90 minutes in restraints, and access to the city’s data files, records, CCTV, and any other information that may help him gather his own evidence and walk away a free man.

It's an exciting concept, a new take on this setup, and another entry in the growing canon of screenlife filmmaking. And who better to helm it than Timur Bekmambetov, who was once best known for his Night/Day Watch duo of vampire films (2004/2006), but who more recently has helped pioneer screenlife in a producer role on films like Unfriended (2015) and Searching (2018).
