It's hard not to root for Nancy Thompson, a girl experiencing this horrifying phenomenon that nobody else believes. They constantly chalk up her experiences with Freddy as just a dream but the audience knows better, making it frustrating and utterly terrifying that she’s all alone in this struggle.

Nancy is actually a pretty smart character, and she slowly discovers the rules of the dreamworld, specifically that you can bring things back to reality. She pieces together the mystery of Freddy, and she doesn’t just wait for him to come to her. Instead, she devises a solid plan, setting up a bunch of booby traps and planning to bring Freddy into the real world to kill.

Of course that's all totally screwed up by Glen when he falls asleep, but Nancy still manages to defeat Freddy and is able to take away his powers. No, he isn’t really gone, but Nancy is still a great protagonist who figures things out, comes up a solid plan, and is able to emerge mostly victorious.
