20 Most Controversial Film Endings Since 2000

17. The Descent

What's it about? Neil Marshall's horror movie has a threadbare plot: after heading out for a weekend of spelunking, heading down into previously unexplored caving systems, a group of women find themselves being picked off one by one by flesh-eating humanoid creatures who have adjusted to life beneath the surface. How does it end? Lone survivor Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) pulls herself up to the surface caked in blood and speeds off in her car. But then she wakes up, revealing that her escape was a dream and that she's still trapped underground, the creatures closing in around her. The US version omits this reveal, suggesting that she does actually escape. Why was it controversial? The US version was the one which some found to be controversial, lacking the bravery to go full-on dark with the downbeat ending and instead concluding on a note of optimism which felt at odds with the otherwise grim material.
