5. Salo - Enforced Pooh Pooh Eating (1975)

There is an awful lot of Pooh pooh flying around in Salo, it's the freaking main lead player! Still we cannot really throw bricks at Pasolini. He was attempting to put the Marquis de Sade's 120 Days of Sodom onto celluloid. I have read the 120 Days of Sodom and I believe Pasolini did just about the best interpretation any director could have given it. It's an ugly book that swirls downwards into ultra-depravity and Pasolini honours this. The controversial scene is obviously going to be a scatological one with the tide of liberal pooh that surrounds this movie. It is the scene where the young girl is forced to eat the Duke's turds. It is grim and disgusting but Pasolini was a very political man and he adapted the setting of the 120 days of Sodom to Fascist Italy. I think Pasolini was a bit left wing and this was his statement on Italian Fascist collaborators with Hitler during World War Two. Salo was a nickname for a puppet fascist state run by Mussolini. Political as well as poopy!
