11. The Passion Of the Christ (2004)

Mel Gibson's directorial depiction of Jesus-torture leading up to his crucifixion, is not exactly the world's jolliest film and seems to revel in its violence against Christ. Praised by hardcore Christians and derided by others as anti-Semitic, the controversial scenes in The Passion deal with the protracted torture of Jesus - being whipped and scourged in super close, unflinching detail, carrying the cross, getting the crown of thorns placed on his head, and his agonising crucifixion. Now to be fair, Jesus probably did endure a nasty time of it during this period of history but what Mel Gibson did was Jesus-sploitation - dwelling on the more prurient aspects to get bums on seats. He should have focused more on the Resurrection to balance the story out. But that's just me, loads of people like this film.
