20 Most Controversial Video Nasties

14. Blood Feast (1963)

blood feast Infamous HG Lewis/David Friedman excursion into the then nascent explicit horror market - I guess that you could call it 'goresploitation'. Lewis wanted gore in this movie - lashings of gore to upset the people in the Grindhouses and Drive ins. The plot may be silly - An Egyptian caterer named Fuad wants to make a sacrifice to the Goddess Ishtar using body parts culled from young ladies - but the gory scenes packed a punch. Audiences were aghast at scenes of a tongue being pulled out of a young man, a heart being eviscerated, limbs being chopped off and brains being literally picked. As the teenagers in the drive in jumped out of their cars to puke, film maker John Waters decided on his vocation in life. The gore is quite extreme but thankfully for the most part, it was shoddy as well. Connie Mason's severed tongue is ridiculously large and the limb removal scenes in the bath are blatantly fake but something still upset the censors enough about Blood Feast to have it in the same category of the 39 prosecuted films. In 2005, the ban was lifted and Blood Feast is now out there In an uncut form for us all to enjoy. Controversial because: it has scenes of ridiculous uber violence and gore courtesy of the killing of young women.
