12. Nightmares In A Damaged Brain (1981)

eeff George gets released from a psychiatric hospital and goes on a pilgrimage to find his family. There is significant childhood trauma at the back of his mind and this forces him to kill women in ever more gruesome ways. George's ex wife and kids start to receive mystery caller phone calls which they just hang up. He arrives at the house and kills the babysitter. His kids hide in the bedroom and find a gun and the son shoots George. In his dying state he recalls his childhood trauma in full - upon discovering his mother with a lover, he chopped them to bits with an axe. As George is being stretchered away, the police question his son who at the end of the film smiles and winks into the camera. The wee git. Extremely boring horror movie which only gets funny when George has some weird sort of fit on the floor in his Y fronts, foaming at the mouth. Apparently the film's director Romano Scavolini got sentenced to 18 months in jail for refusing to strike out a second long cut from the film. The movie is so rubbish I would have denied all association with it. There is bad acting, crap dubbing, countless continuity errors and an overall cheap and nasty film vibe. I think that Tom Savini was linked to the film in some tiny way - like he had a one off phone call with the special effects people or something but his named was trumpeted by all the old film posters and trailers. How depressed must he be, implicated in all of this faecal matter. And the special effects are rubbish to add insult to injury. Controversial because: OTT gory murders

My first film watched was Carrie aged 2 on my dad's knee. Educated at The University of St Andrews and Trinity College Dublin. Fan of Arthouse, Exploitation, Horror, Euro Trash, Giallo, New French Extremism. Weaned at the bosom of a Russ Meyer starlet. The bleaker, artier or sleazier the better!
