5. Keeper
After delivering two of the wildest and most memorable horror films of the past few years in Longlegs and The Monkey, Osgood Perkins seemed primed to deliver a bonkers trifecta with his most recent effort, Keeper.
While star Tatiana Maslany once again gives a strong performance in the lead role, this singularly deranged riff on the typical cabin-in-the-woods logline is ultimately too spare and meandering for its own good.
Despite a compelling setup and some vibes-rich imagery, Keeper feels more like an intriguing short film concept that was needlessly distended out to feature length, considering the utter slog that is the film's leaden middle act.
It surely didn't help that Neon marketed the film as another wild romp from the guy who made Longlegs and The Monkey, when this is in fact a decidedly more quiet and subdued folk horror that unfortunately lurches into genuine tedium on occasion.
