11. The Final Shootout - Wind River
Taylor Sheridan's white-knuckle thriller concludes in stunning fashion as rookie FBI agent Jane Banner's (Elizabeth Olsen) investigation into a young woman's death leads her to an isolated drill site, and specifically the crew's sleeping quarters.
With backup, she knocks on the door of the quarters, at which point one of the men inside fires a shotgun, the shock of which is thankfully absorbed by Jane's bulletproof vest.
The cops and drill crew men all pull their guns and open fire on one another, resulting in most of the men being killed save for Jane and a few scant drill crew members.
At that moment, tracker Cory (Jeremy Renner) blows the remaining men away with his sniper rifle, before heading out to deal with the last man standing (by leaving him in the snow to die of a pulmonary haemorrhage).
With its grounded, detached approach to violence and lack of stylistic exaggeration, it's one of the most brutal, shocking and simply righteous action scenes all year.
