20 Most Extreme Horror Films Of All Time

13. Cannibal Holocaust (1980)

United Artists Europa

Cannibal Holocaust is a horror film in the most literal sense. It isn't necessarily scary, though it doesn't try to be. A poster child of the renowned Video Nasty scare, what can really be said of Ruggero Deodato's seminal work that hasn't been said already?

The film follows a documentary crew who goes missing in the Amazon and an anthropology professor who decides to embark on a mission to find out what has happened to them. In the jungle, he is confronted with hostile natives but he manages to gain their trust and retrieve several film reels – which is all that is left of the crew. The professor takes them back to NYC and watches the screen in horror.

The atrocities that the film crew either filmed or perpetrated include: a native killing a woman with a stone dildo, a native woman having her fetus forcibly aborted and buried in mud, the crew raping a native girl, the crew coming across a woman impaled on a pole, and much more. Things come to a head when the natives wreak a terrible revenge on the crew which is captured to the bitter end. It is a groundbreaking, shocking and challenging film and its reputation is well-deserved.
