The first of two classics by Master of Suspense Alfred Hitchcock to top Rotten Tomatoes’ most highly rated horrors is his 1963 avian creep fest The Birds.

Like so many animal horror movies released since, in The Birds it’s not knife-wielding serial killers or vengeful supernatural beings that are the threat but the natural world instead.

But whereas films like Jaws, Arachnophobia and Black Water featured animals that were already terrifying (sharks, spiders and crocs respectively), The Birds takes our usually innocuous feathered friends and turns them into fearsome foes which is somehow all the more terrifying a premise than an animal that already wants to kill you.

Frequently hailed one of the best horrors of all time, it’s also both an inductee of the National Film Registry and the short-lived and slightly less prestigious Horror Hall of Fame and whether you’re already ornithophobic or not, you’ll be eyeing pigeons a whole lot differently after watching The Birds.
