20 Most Idiotic Film Twists Of All Time
11. Two Twists For The Price Of One - Brake
The Twist: After spending the whole movie locked in the trunk of a car by terrorists, Secret Service agent Jeremy Reins (Stephen Dorff) finds out that the ordeal has been a test to see whether Jeremy was ready for the Presidential security detail.
He's loaded into an ambulance with his wife Molly (Chyler Leigh), who then asks him if the Washington Monument was the secret location the terrorists were after, and once he tacitly confirms this, Molly speaks over an earpiece that they now know the location.
Yep, it's a double-bluff: Molly and all the other characters were, in fact, terrorists, and the movie ends with Molly killing Jeremy with gas, while the audience is led to assume that the attack on the President will go ahead as planned.
Why It's Stupid: Because it's just too much of a muchness. The first twist was silly but unexpected and relatively amusing, but to then pull the rug out again once the rug has already been pulled just feels like overdoing it, and the ultimate reaction from many audiences will surely be laughter rather than shock.
Even ignoring the immense implausibility of Jeremy's wife being a deep cover terrorist, it just feels so tacked on and arbitrarily employed for its "surprise! gotcha!" value.
