Andrzej Żuławski's Possession is the kind of film that, as a cinema fan, you come across maybe a dozen times in your life. One of those movies where you just can't believe what you're watching, and you absolutely need to tell others all about it.

If there is a movie deserving the tag "psychological horror", it is this one. What starts off as the falling apart of a marriage quickly spirals into insanity. When the movie enters its second, violently surreal act, we learn of the true nature of the protagonist's extra-marital tryst. Namely, she regularly visits a dilapidated apartment, inhabited by a blood and sex-starved monster, whom she both nurtures and couples with.

In due course her husband witnesses his ultimate trauma, peeking at his wife having sex with the creature - her limbs all mixed up with its tentacles. Funny enough, the monster's design is courtesy of the great Carlo Rambaldi, who concocted it exactly one year before presenting the world with its ultimate cuddly friend, E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial.
