20 Most Oscar Nominated Movies Ever - Ranked From Worst To Best
11. Ben-Hur (1959)
Nominations: 12
Wins: 11 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Visual Effects, Best Original Score)
William Wyler's 3.5-hour epic is one of just three films to win a jaw-dropping 11 Oscars, and it's easily one of the more accessible of the "older" Best Picture winners.
With a huge scope, transfixing subject matter, a terrific Charlton Heston performance and one of cinema's all-time great set-pieces (the unforgettable chariot race sequence), Ben-Hur is unquestionably a film that's truly stood the test of time.
It is definitely too long resulting in a few lapses in interest, but it's an incredibly strong genre film for the most part, and one that with its preference for dangerous practical stunt-work, could never really be made the same way today (as evidenced by last summer's pallid CGI-infested remake).
