Never, ever bet against James Cameron. Despite going massively over-budget and the majority of the movie press turning on the project, Titanic ended up being a colossal critical and commercial success, and to date remains the second highest-grossing film of all time (behind only Cameron's Avatar).
The film itself is an unapologetic melodrama, suffused with a sizzling doomed romance and eye-popping action sequences that add up to a highly entertaining if not especially nuanced tale, hence the film conspicuously missing out on a nomination for its screenplay.
L.A. Confidential is certainly the better film overall and should've won Best Picture, but it's hard to argue with the film's mind-boggling set-pieces, iconic performances and overall dramatic thrall.
