20 Most Oscar Nominated Movies Ever - Ranked From Worst To Best
13. Shakespeare In Love (1998)
Nominations: 13
Wins: 7 (Best Picture, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actress, Best Original Screenplay, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score)
There's a heap of undue hate piled on this film because it incredulously beat out Saving Private Ryan for Best Picture, but removed from that context, John Madden's comedy about a young William Shakespeare is a peppy delight.
The real winner here is Marc Norman and Tom Stoppard's pithy screenplay, while a fleet of knowing performances and gorgeous production design certainly don't hurt.
Yes, Judi Dench probably didn't deserve the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her 8 minutes of screen time (something even she acknowledged when winning the award), but people just want to find reasons to not like the movie really.
It shouldn't have won Best Picture, but it's a riveting, often hilarious film worthy of most if not all of its nominations.
