Nominations: 12

Wins: 9 (Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress, Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, Best Sound, Best Film Editing, Best Original Score)

The English Patient has something of a reputation for being "that boring Oscar bait movie" unaided by it being the focal point of an hilarious Seinfeld episode, but if you're prepared to saddle up for a fairly sedate 162 minutes, it is a sensual, romantic epic shot forward by some fantastic work by Ralph Fiennes, Kristen Scott Thomas and Juliette Binoche in particular.

On the flip-side it's way, way too long and there are times where the romantic frisson feels a little tame, as though the film didn't want to offend milquetoast sensibilities. This is probably why it's regarded as Oscar bait by so many.

Chalk it up as a Best Picture winner you'll probably only want to see once every few years at most, but it's well-mounted and entertaining all the same.
