Since the year 2000 a group of French filmmakers have been going out of their way to compete with the best the rest of the world has to offer in the downright brutal horror stakes and Inside is a more than worthy addition to that particular canon of movies which collectively fall under the label of New French Extremity. Ostensibly a home invasion movie, what separates Inside from the rest of the pack is the infliction of "torture porn" on a pregnant protagonist. The occasional shot showing the literal inside of her womb certainly adds to the growing feeling of discomfort but it is the rest of the blood-letting which makes the film such a violent viewing experience. Audacious and brutal, Inside is also a surprisingly well constructed affair with memorable performances from Alysson Paradis and Beatrice Dalle.
