Not every thriller needs to reinvent the wheel to deserve your attention, in which case we come to the criminally under-seen Dead of Winter.

The new film from Brian Kirk (21 Bridges) is built around two enticing feats of against-type casting.

Firstly, Emma Thompson stars as a troubled American woman who inadvertently interrupts the kidnapping of a teenage girl and is swiftly forced to act. One of the kidnappers, meanwhile, is played by the ever-underappreciated Judy Greer.

The novelty factor of seeing Thompson and Greer playing characters they've never attempted before is undeniable, but Dead of Winter also happens to be a well-crafted, snow-topped thriller with a keen sense of pace that easily delivers the Fargo-adjacent goods.

Is it the most original or diverting film released this year? Certainly not, but it's well-crafted Dad Movie fodder with striking visuals and fine performances, and sometimes that's exactly what the appetite craves.
