20 Most Overlooked Movies Of 2025

14. Pillion

Die My Love Jennifer Lawrence Robert Pattinson
Warner Bros.

One of the most confident directorial debuts of the year, Harry Lighton's Pillion has received well-earned raves ever since its Cannes premiere, though this comedic BDSM drama hasn't even cracked $1 million at the box office.

Harry Melling and Alexander Skarsgård are equally terrific as our two leads - a shy, anxious gay man and the mysterious, ultra-confident biker he begins a BDSM relationship with.

Lighton meanwhile does a marvelous job of keeping an even handle on the film's tone, which has plenty of fun with the unexpected pairing of Melling and Skarsgård, all while operating as a serious-minded and even-handed look at an often misjudged subculture.

Above all else Pillion is an intimate, well-woven character study that remains true to its characters to the very end, avoiding the sentimental flourishes one might expect.

Though the film recently scooped four gongs at the British Independent Film Awards - including Best British Independent Film - this sadly doesn't seem likely to translate into any love from the Oscars.
