Noughties remakes of classic films didn’t often get the reception they were hoping for; just look at Tony Scott’s The Taking of Pelham 123, Rob Zombie’s Halloween, or Tim Burton’s Planet of the Apes. However, one film not only bossed the remake, but left the original in the dust: Steven Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven.

Fresh out of jail, Danny Ocean (George Clooney) assembles a crew of swindlers, pickpockets, contortionists, technicians, and con men to knock over three Las Vegas casinos in one night: the Bellagio, the Mirage, and the MGM Grand. Backed by wealthy mogul Reuben Tishkoff (Elliott Gould), Danny, Rusty Ryan (Brad Pitt), Linus Caldwell (Matt Damon), and the rest of the titular eleven pull the wool over everyone’s eyes – including our own – in order to achieve the impossible and swindle ruthless casino owner Terry Benedict (Andy Garcia) out of $160 million.

This picture didn’t just capture the early noughties zeitgeist, but created it, proving that there was space amongst the bubblegum pop, Pokémon, and boy wizards for sharp suits, fast-talking dialogue, and good old cinema trickery. The all-star cast, smoothly cool soundtrack, dry humour and punchy scenes keep the thing in such seamless, constant motion that every time it comes on TV, you find yourself locked in until the end.
