Few noughties comedies are as widely recognisable or quotable as Step Brothers. Adam McKay’s film puts 40-year-old, jobless, stay-at-home adult children Brennan Huff (Will Ferrell) and Dale Doback (John C. Reilly) on a collision course when their single parents move in together. Forced to share a bedroom, these new stepbrothers begin as enemies before their own individual stupidities unite as one.

What follows are home-made collapsing bunk beds, job interviews in tuxedos, and a new entertainment business, Prestige Worldwide, with its inaugural promotional music video, “Boats and Hoes”. Now, on paper this may not seem like all-timer kind of stuff, but on the screen it’s something else. Ferrell and Reilly sell their parts so well that Step Brothers has become one of the Millennial generation’s defining comedies, and while it feels very much of its time, that’s not a bad thing.

Brennan and Dale embody a mindset and approach to life that so many of those of us who were teens at the time identify deeply with. And the film sits in a cosy little bubble just on the precipice of the 2008 financial crash, and the subsequent miseries that would follow year after year after year. So yeah, sometimes you just want to eat microwave nachos, play the drums and make bunk beds – and for that reason, Step Brothers will never be far from the DVD player.
