20 Most Rewatchable Movies Of The 21st Century
14. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)
So influential that original itinerant super spy James Bond decided to reboot and outright copy him, Jason Bourne was a big deal during his three-movie run. Bringing with him a more realistic depiction of life in the spy game, The Bourne Identity and in particular The Bourne Supremacy gave the genre a jolt of energy, via political smarts and a shrewd docu-style that remorselessly amped up the tension.
Even better than either of them, though, was and still is The Bourne Ultimatum, a showcase for returning director Paul Greengrass' camerawork and editing, here focused to a fine kinetic point. Quite simply, next to all the imitators of the handheld docu-realist style that arose after Greengrass came to prominence, The Bourne Ultimatum still rises above as a clear master. The Tangiers rooftop chase, between Bourne and a rival agent, and the race across New York in increasingly battered vehicles are just two examples of what thrills Greengrass gave to The Bourne Ultimatum.
It's the best of the original trilogy (the less said about The Bourne Legacy, the better), removing any superfluous elements to essentially become one big chase movie. And really, wasn't that what the Bourne films were always about anyway?
