The Moment: Erik Selvig is still suffering the after-effects of being under Loki's mind control for so long, and has basically become a mad scientist caricature. This includes him being institutionalised after stripping naked and attempting to perform scientific experiments at Stonehenge.

Why It's Ridiculous: It's pretty out-there as far as comic relief goes, and guarantees that the audience won't ever really be able to take the character seriously again. On the other hand, considering how utterly dull so much of The Dark World was, it was also kinda welcome in its own demented way.

It was a desperation move to spice things up a bit, but it turned a pretty decent character into nothing more than a punchline.
