16. Mike And Sully Banish Randall For Attempting To Save Monstropolis Monsters Inc
I think Randall gets a bad reputation in the Monster Inc. film. Yes hes ambitious and willing to screw people over, but thats sort of the way the world works for the go-getters, especially in something as high-powered and necessary as Monstropolis screaming business appears to be. He puts in late shifts some might call it cheating and shows admirable dedication to his work to keep up with the once-in-a-lifetime scaring talent that is James Sullivan. Of course, hes just as aware as anyone that the screams arent going to be sustainable, and works around the clock under the aegis of Monsters Inc boss Mr. Waternoose to attempt to come up with better ways to harvest screams. Yes, his solution turns out to be extremely inelegant and probably barbaric, but damn it, the man was trying his hardest to save the city and accept all the acclaim that came with it. He didnt know that laughter was the best medicine, so when Mike and Sully scupper his plans, hes justifiably pissed off and chases them throughout the factory to recover his test subject, Boo. Of course, because Boo is adorable, he doesnt get to achieve his aim, and instead finds himself at the mercy of our two heroes, who indulge in some shockingly ridiculous mob justice by banishing him from Monstropolis with little explanation, leaving him to beaten up by a Louisiana trailer-dweller armed with a skillet and a hatred of reptiles. Did nobody else think this was a bit of a harsh overreaction? Yes, Randall did wrong, but despite his selfish outlook he actually had noble aims he wanted to keep his city alive. Remember that when Sully and Mike leave the building with Mr. Waternoose in custody, they think theyve pretty much doomed the city to suffer a dark age. If Sully hadnt immediately had a brainwave, Im sure the citizens of Monstropolis wouldve been faintly irritated they banished the man with the next-best-plan and broke his machine. I mean, you couldve just thrown him is a cell or something what they did was massively over the top.
