14. Begbie Violently Assaults For Minor Pub Etiquette Breaks €“ Trainspotting

Trainspotting Begbie If there€™s three words that described Robert Carlyle€™s monstrous Begbie it€™s these €“ insanely violent lunatic. By far the scariest of the heroin junkies in Danny Boyle€™s Scotland-based smash, Carlyle€™s constantly feral-looking appearance gave the impression that he was going to lash out at any moment, and by god, he didn€™t disappoint. Unlike most of the cast, the man wasn€™t even on drugs €“ he was just a nutcase. There€™s two instances where Begbie chooses to unleash his inner psycho €“ firstly, he smashes a man around the head with a pool cue for daring to eat crisps so loudly. Now, I don€™t condone violence but if ever there came a time to smash a man with a large stick of wood, it would either be if your life was actively in danger or if said man was in fact a zombie. Braining an individual for applying the wrong masticatory techniques to savoury snacks does not feature on this list, yet Begbie piles in anyway. It€™s not even the most brutal assault Begbie carries out €“ that honour falls to glassing a man for spilling a pint. Now, we all know that this is a social faux pas in a pub situation, but it€™s usually sorted out with some strong words and the offer to buy a new beverage and then the situation€™s put to bed. Not with Begbie though €“ he glasses the man for his ignorance, causing awful facial wounds and probable permanent scars. After witnessing such over-the-top violence, is it any wonder that Renton eventually cuts him out of their monetary plans? Hell, the only time Begbie€™s rage is ever justified is after he figures out what happened, but then he just trashes a hotel room instead. Presumably there weren€™t enough weapons in sight.
