Despite a fairly mediocre marketing campaign, there was a tidal wave of industry hype behind A Wrinkle in Time, with it being the first $100 million movie ever directed by a black woman.

And though some insist that there's a distinct liberal bias among film critics, they sure didn't hold back ripping Ava DuVernay's first foray into blockbuster territory to shreds.

Initial expectations were that the film would be a strong critical success even if it bombed at the box office, but due to its over-reliance on garish visual effects, some dodgy supporting performances and an aimless narrative, A Wrinkle in Time ended up flopping with both the press and general audiences.

It has its passionate cheerleaders who insist it'll become a cult fave in the years to come, but that's not a particularly convincing stance.
