The marketing campaign for Godzilla: King of the Monsters did pretty much everything right, namely promising more of the monster mayhem that was largely denied to fans in Gareth Edwards' 2014 movie.

With the reliable Michael Dougherty (Trick 'r Treat, Krampus) at the helm, there was no reason to believe it wouldn't top that film's respectable 75% Tomatometer.

But then the reviews came in.

Despite its epic potential, King of the Monsters was pilloried by most critics for its terrible story and awful human characters, who once again took too much precedent over the CGI-fuelled spectacle audiences actually paid to see.

The reception was shocking enough that the film's box office was drastically impacted, grossing almost $150 million less than the previous film and prompting Warner Bros. to push their already-shot Godzilla vs. Kong back by over eight months for reportedly "heavy" reshoots. Oof.
