But even the disappointment of The Rise of Skywalker was more predictable than the near-universal praise for Bong Joon-ho's new socially conscious thriller Parasite.

Though every single one of the South Korean filmmaker's movies have been warmly embraced by critics, Parasite's 99% approval rating, combined with a virtually unprecedented 9.4 average score, makes it far and away the best-reviewed film of 2019.

In fact, the praise is pervasive enough that, despite the historic awards prejudices against foreign language films, even the Golden Globes nominated the film for Best Director and Best Screenplay awards (in addition to Best Foreign Language Film).

It remains to be seen if Parasite has what it takes to land a Best Picture Oscar nomination, but given how passionately critics and audiences alike have been gunning for it, it'd be a major shame on the Academy if they chose to ignore it.

Though good-to-great reviews were expected for Parasite, over 300 reviews that were mostly five-star raves? Not a chance.
